I’m a Tennessee-based wedding and family photographer with over six years of experience. My passion is helping you feel relaxed in front of the camera while capturing meaningful moments that will be cherished for generations.
One of the most common questions my couples ask is, “What should we wear for our engagement photos?” And honestly, it’s such an important one.
What you wear plays a huge role in how your photos feel. The right outfits can make your images look timeless, effortless, and cohesive, while the wrong ones can feel distracting or take away from the moment.
If you’re planning engagement photos in Knoxville, Johnson City, or anywhere in East Tennessee, I want to walk you through exactly what photographs beautifully and help you feel confident going into your session.

When it comes to engagement photo outfits, I always recommend starting with neutral and soft tones. Colors like cream, beige, soft blues, sage green, taupe, and muted pastels photograph beautifully in almost every setting.
East Tennessee has such natural, scenic backdrops—mountains, fields, gardens, and tree-lined locations—so wearing colors that complement nature instead of competing with it will always look more timeless.
Try to avoid overly bright or neon colors, as well as super bold patterns. These can pull attention away from you and date your photos over time.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that outfits need to match perfectly. Instead, I always encourage couples to coordinate rather than match.
Think of your outfits as telling the same story, just in slightly different ways. Choose colors that complement each other and mix textures or tones to create depth.
For example:
The goal is to look cohesive without looking identical.
If you’re unsure how to pair colors together, using a tool like Coolors can help you visualize a color palette that feels cohesive, check out Coolers Color Palette Generator .

This is one of the most important tips I can give you. Your engagement photos should feel like you.
If you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, it will show in your photos. I always recommend choosing outfits that you feel confident and natural in—something you’d wear on a really good day, just slightly elevated.
If you love more casual styles, lean into that. If you love dressing up, go for it. There’s no one “right” look, as long as it feels authentic to you.
Outfits that have movement and texture photograph so beautifully, especially in outdoor East Tennessee locations.
For example:
These elements add depth to your images and help create that soft, romantic feel so many couples love.

East Tennessee has such distinct seasons, and your outfits should reflect that.
Spring:
Soft pastels, light fabrics, and airy outfits work beautifully with blooming flowers and greenery.
Summer:
Lightweight fabrics, breathable outfits, and lighter colors help keep things comfortable and fresh.
Fall:
Warm tones like olive and deeper neutrals look incredible with fall foliage.
Winter:
Neutrals, layers, coats, and textures like wool or knits create a cozy, timeless look.
Dressing for the season not only keeps you comfortable but also helps your photos feel cohesive with the environment.
There are a few things I always recommend avoiding when choosing outfits:
The goal is for you to be the focus, not your outfit.
If you can, I always recommend bringing a second outfit to your engagement session. This gives you more variety in your gallery and allows you to have both a more casual and a slightly dressier look.
For example:
This adds dimension to your photos and gives you more options when using them for save-the-dates or your wedding website.

You don’t have to figure this out alone. When you book an engagement session with me, I always help my couples with outfit guidance.
Whether that’s reviewing options, helping you choose between outfits, or giving feedback on colors and combinations, I want you to feel completely confident going into your session.
At the end of the day, the best outfits are the ones that feel natural, comfortable, and true to you. When you feel confident, it shows in every photo.
If you’re planning engagement photos in Knoxville, Johnson City, or anywhere in East Tennessee, and want guidance every step of the way, I’d love to help you create a session that feels effortless and meaningful.
